Our language program is not reaching the community. Cowichan Tribes do not apply for the First People heritage Language and culture council (FPHLCC) for program dollars. Nor do they access Heritage Canada funds, or other funding that is available for language and culture.
There are many funding programs that can be applied in language and the arts that add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars to put into our culture and language programs.
They have these meetings for the past few years and very little in the way of outcomes that reach our community.
Understanding and the speaking of the Hul’qumi’num’ language is in a “State of Emergency” where there are so few who are fluent in the language. There are programs that can be used to revive the language and early interventions to bring back our language so that we may all learn to speak in our own language.
