Community is trying to increase awareness of great concerns about evictions of young families from the Cowichan Tribes rental units. They are being told they have exceeded occupancy limits or broken noise bylaws. They are being threatened with loss of social services.
What are these people to do? Where are they to go?
Cowichan Tribes Chief Lydia Hwitsum defended the action.
“The process of eviction is clearly defined in the Cowichan Tribes Sustainable Housing Policy and implemented by the Housing Committee,” she said. “As for the reasons for these particular evictions, all housing and renter files are confidential but we can assure the community that proper protocol was followed.”
With a growing homeless population, the basic needs of many community members are not being met.
